The Ming and Qing Dynasties were the last two centralized unification dynasties in the history of our country. From the perspective of the history of art development, some non-mainstream art forms flourished during this period, such as fiction and drama which were at their peak then. In contrast, although mainstream arts had continued their past prosperity, they failed to attain earlier aesthetic heights. Against this background, both the number and level of artistic performance of tomb murals have decreased, which indicates the art of tomb murals was in decline. To be precise, there were a small number of tomb murals created during the dynasties. Moreover, surviving examples occur in very few regions, including Sichuan province, which displays a certain scale. Therefore, only part of the discussion can be involved in this chapter given the bleak outline of the Ming and Qing dynasties’ tomb murals.
