Cascaded Submodule Static Synchronous Compensator

This chapter examines cascaded submodule static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) systems. It covers several key aspects: the structure of cascaded submodule STATCOMs, mathematical models and controller designs for both star-connected and delta-connected STATCOMs. The discussion includes controller design for both star-connected and delta-connected STATCOMs under balanced, unbalanced, and distorted AC grid voltage conditions, as well as their dual role in reactive power compensation and active filtering. The chapter also explores the application of star-connected STATCOMs in capacitor commutated converters (CCC) and concludes with factors to consider when choosing between star-connected and delta-connected STATCOMs.
