I have frequently sought to use, develop, and defend the concept of media imperialism (see Boyd-Barrett, 2015, 2020; Boyd-Barrett & Mirrlees, 2020 for extensive references). This has often been with a view to putting some blue water between it and its sister (or, should I rather say, mother) concept of cultural imperialism. Other times I have wanted to insist that it is not a single “theory” but more usefully thought of as a field of study of the very complex and dialectical tangle of relationships between ideas of imperialism and ideas of media (both very loaded terms) in contexts of colonization, resistance, liberation, and renewal.
