Indigenous peoples in many parts of the world have become incorporated into multi-ethnic nation-states. Outsiders have come in, some wanting to help the local people in various ways but others wanting to exploit the mineral and other resources within the territories of indigenous peoples. Often this has an environmental impact, exacerbating climate change. Whereas the outsiders may see the resources in terms of ownership, many indigenous peoples view their use of the land not as owners but as stewards who should protect and pass on the resources to the following generation.
