AI: A Helping Tool for Humans
摘要
At Heatherwick Studio, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) since 2021 has transformed our design process, enhancing efficiency and creativity across diverse projects. This paper explores our journey of adopting AI as a complementary tool, balancing its potential with our studio’s human-centred design philosophy. From early experiments with custom image generation using diffusion models to the development of in-house tools like the Rhino Plug-in “Dreamhopper” and the 2024 launch of “A.I. Heatherwick”—trained on 120,000 archived project images—we have tailored AI to reflect our unique visual language. Internal surveys reveal widespread adoption across departments, with 50% of staff utilising AI, particularly in early design stages (30%) and text-based tasks (15%). By refining AI tools to align with our creative identity, we amplify productivity, accelerate ideation, and maintain the human judgement essential to delivering innovative, people-focussed designs. This strategic evolution underscores AI’s role as a powerful ally in architecture and design, enhancing rather than replacing the human touch.
