The Fire of Intelligence: From Prometheus to AI
摘要
This paper explores the evolution of intelligence, from Prometheus’s mythical gift of fire to the contemporary rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI), drawing parallels between fire as a transformative force in early human civilisation and AI as a dynamic agent in the field of architecture. AI, much like fire, has the potential to act as a catalyst for innovation, creating new possibilities in design, analysis, and production. The paper delves into three key aspects of AI's role in architecture: its agency as a cognitive extension within design processes, its function as a technique or tool that augments architectural practice, and the networks of collaboration it facilitates within the profession. Drawing on concepts such as the extended mind and hybrid cognition, AI is framed not merely as a tool but as a co-creator in the architectural process. It is positioned as both a cognitive partner and a catalyst for interdisciplinary collaboration, reshaping traditional workflows and promoting more flexible, decentralised structures within the architectural profession. By integrating AI into the design and decision-making process, architects are presented with the opportunity to enhance creativity, efficiency, and sustainability, fostering a more inclusive and collaborative architectural environment. Ultimately, this paper poses critical questions about how we will engage with AI, suggesting that it has the potential to redefine architectural practices and human creativity in the years to come.
