Reducing Foreign Language Anxiety
摘要
This chapter reviews strategies for reducing foreign language anxiety (FLA), which can be broadly classified into four categories: self-regulation, awareness-raising, skill-building, and modifying classroom techniques. Experimental interventions targeting FLA reduction have revealed several recurring trends. Affective strategies drawn from Oxford’s taxonomy have been widely used to foster emotional self-regulation; Rational Emotive Therapy (RET) has served as a key approach to help learners identify and challenge irrational beliefs; drama-based methods and cooperative digital storytelling have been implemented to develop language skills; and efforts to enhance teacher–student interaction have shown consistent success in lowering FLA. More recently, two emerging approaches have gained traction in FLA reduction: the use of computer-mediated communication (CMC) and the integration of positive psychology (PP) principles into language pedagogy.
