A Review on Security Attack Analysis and Countermeasures on Thumbnail Preserving Cryptosystem

Uploading images to image hosting systems might give rise to privacy problems. In the context of traditional image encryption, images that include significant crucial content are converted into encrypted images that resemble noise and are devoid of any visual information. This process ensures privacy protection from unauthorized access, but it comes at the cost of visual usefulness. To overcome this, thumbnail-preserving encryption (TPE) was recently introduced as a method to maintain the integrity of a thumbnail while encrypting it to find a balance between privacy and usability. The goal of this research is to provide a brief overview of various security attacks on TPE schemes and their countermeasures and then classify the security attacks. Furthermore, different technical perspectives are used to summarize and compare the contributions of the surveyed techniques. After that, notable evaluation metrics of the corresponding security attacks are provided. Finally, the significant issues are highlighted, and a few possible research directions are suggested that could fill the gaps in these domains for researchers and developers.
