The rising demand for sustainable and environmentally friendly materials in packaging has prompted the investigation of biochar as a carbon-dense material obtained from biomass pyrolysis. The recent development of biochar production, physicochemical characteristics, and biochar-composite applications in packaging were critically reviewed in this chapter. Issues related to conventional packaging materials and benefits of biochar material and composite have been described. The issues related to environmental and economic aspects were discussed in terms of eco-friendliness, cost-effectiveness, safety and shelf life, and impact on environmental sustainability. The challenges and directions of future work were discussed and reviewed for a holistic approach toward an understanding of biochar application in packaging.
