Could corticosteroids hold the key to improving outcomes in prolonged acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)? The LATE STEROID RESCUE STUDY (LaSRS) was a multicenter, randomized trial assessing the efficacy and safety of corticosteroid therapy in patients with persistent ARDS. The study found that corticosteroids administered to patients with ongoing ARDS improved lung function and decreased the duration of mechanical ventilation at 28 days without increasing the risk ofinfections or other major adverse effects. However, mortality rates were similar in both groups. These findings did not support the routine use of methylprednisolone among patients with persistent ARDS.
