The CORTICUS trial asked the question: Does hydrocortisone save lives in septic shock? This landmark trial evaluated the effect of low-dose hydrocortisone therapy on patients with septic shock who were not responding to conventional therapy. A total of 499 patients were randomized to receive either hydrocortisone or a placebo in addition to standard care. The study found that hydrocortisone administration did not significantly reduce 28-day mortality, but did improve shock reversal and the duration of vasopressor therapy.
