Nanotechnology in Crop Breeding
摘要
This chapter explores the role of nanotechnology in revolutionizing crop breeding and advancing sustainable agriculture. Nanotechnology, operating at the nanoscale, offers innovative solutions for enhancing crop productivity, improving nutrient delivery, and enhancing crop protection. The various applications include Nano-fertilizers, nano-pesticides, and nano-herbicides which have demonstrated significant potential in improving nutrient uptake, controlling pests and diseases, and managing weeds while minimizing environmental impact and reducing several other pressing challenges in modern agriculture. Furthermore, nanotechnology is revolutionizing genetic modification by enabling precise and efficient gene delivery systems that accelerate breeding processes. Using nanoparticles (NPs), desirable traits like disease resistance and drought tolerance can be introduced into crops with greater precision and effectiveness. On the other hand, nanosensors play a crucial role in monitoring plant health, detecting pathogens, and optimizing resource use, leading to more efficient and sustainable farming practices. Despite challenges such as environmental safety, regulatory issues, and economic viability, continued research and innovation in nanotechnology are set to propel progress in crop breeding, growing a more sustainable and resilient future for agriculture.
