Contribution of Environmental Toxicants and Lifestyle in the Development of Cardiovascular Diseases

Various environmental toxicants and lifestyle factors significantly predispose a host to the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Some of the main environmental toxicants implicated in CVD development include, but are not limited to, heavy metals, bisphenol A (BPA), and other chemicals such as pesticides. Unhealthy lifestyle habits such as sedentary behavior, smoking, alcohol consumption, and poor diet, paired with environmental toxicants, increase the risk of CVD. The environment, being a complex system, requires a combination of factors to be accounted for. The social environment greatly influences the natural environment, such as pollution in an industrial environment. This, in turn, may be related to an individual’s socio-economic status and its place of residence. These distinct characteristics shape individual choices, thereby affecting the individual’s outcome in the progression of CVD. Of utmost importance is an understanding of the outcome of the combined individual and environmental factors and the resultant risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. This, in turn, allows for alternate methods of prevention and treatment planning, in order to combat the ever-increasing burden of patients with cardiovascular diseases.
