Diabetes mellitus (DM) is an endocrine-related chronic disease affecting 637 million people worldwide, with the highest mortality rate. It is a metabolic ailment caused by decreased or absent insulin release from the pancreatic islets of Langerhans, resulting in type 1 and type II disorders. Type II diabetes accounts for 75% of all instances worldwide, as are concomitant adaptive illnesses such as obesity, an unhealthy diet combined with a sedentary lifestyle, smoking, and drinking. Poor infrastructure and late diagnosis are the most common causes of high morbidity and death rates in the world. Sedentary and lousy eating habits have become more prevalent in recent years, making middle-aged adults a prime target for this campaign. Developing nations are the most vulnerable to diabetes, and in rural regions of the developing world, people still lack understanding of precautions, and staying healthy is still a possibility. It’s crucial to stress the need for early diagnosis, as it can significantly improve outcomes. Secondary complications, such as hypertension, diabetic foot ulcer, glycosuria, stroke, diabetic retinopathy, and nephropathy, are more commonly documented as death-causing causes in people with diabetes mellitus. Furthermore, each year, an additional 3.3% of obese people develop and become diabetics. Nonetheless, effective therapy is necessary for every indication of diabetes, even if no symptoms are present. The current chapter focuses on diabetes and its secondary consequences at each stage, including inadequate insulin secretion and insulin-associated cellular damage in humans.
