Alginate is an anionic polysaccharide and is extensively used for drug delivery applications due to its biodegradable, biocompatible, and drug-loading capacity. Alginate can be modified into any form, such as hydrogel, scaffold, nanofibers, 3D printed scaffold, microspheres, etc. Due to the tuning properties of alginate, its application is extended to various applications, including diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) treatment. The current book chapter discusses alginate and its role in DFU. Alginate with chitosan makes polyelectrolyte complexes, which help make rigid composite scaffolds. The chapter provides the overview of the studies where various molecules such as drugs growth factors, proteins, peptides, metal ions, and exosomes were loaded into the composite and evaluated for DFU. Further the chapter discusses the alginate dressings in the ongoing clinical trials. With promising results seen in this field, alginate-based dressing materials has potential to treat DFU.

摘要
