Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) composites are increasingly favored over metal in transportation and construction due to their advantageous properties. Despite these benefits, GFRP’s low fire resistance remains a significant drawback. Recent research in Indonesia has identified a novel approach to this challenge, utilizing the country’s abundant pumice resources. A study focused on the fire-retardant potential of 200-mesh pumice from Mount Rinjani, testing concentrations ranging from 2% to 10% by weight in GFRP composites. The results indicate that a 10% concentration of pumice not only enhances the fire resistance but also optimally increases the ignition time and reduces the burning rate. The pumice contributes to fire protection by forming a char layer around the composite, acting as a thermal barrier that slows combustion and shields the interior. This finding underscores the potential of Mount Rinjani pumice as an effective flame-retardant additive for GFRP composites, promising enhanced safety in fire-prone environments.
