Fundamentals of the Brittle–Ductile Transition in the Crust
摘要
In this chapter we briefly review the results of HT–HP rock deformation experiments. Given that rocks in geothermal fields are of sufficiently high temperature to give rise to plastic deformation, we focus on the transition between brittle and plastic deformation. By evaluating the shape change of rock bodies that results from changes in temperature and pressure, we show that it is difficult to undertake in situ observations of ongoing plastic deformation in geothermal fields because of the negligibly small shape change that results from plastic deformation at expected natural strain rates of ~10–14/s.
