This paper examines the path of poverty alleviation for farmers in a Hani village under the jurisdiction of Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan Province. Through interviews and participant observation of the process of implementing Targeted Poverty alleviation in Niuhong Village from 2016 to 2019, the author found that farmers in Niuhong Village were unable to accumulate enough money to live long term in either rural or urban areas by going out to work, forming a cycle of “work-consumption-being penniless-work again”. The article concludes by considering how traditional farmers can become “new farmers” under the control of the “invisible hand” of the market and custom.
