Kernel Topics Self-Given in the Investigation into Translation Essence
摘要
In this chapter, I will discuss two self-given kernel topics in the investigation into translation essence, namely, the translator qua the “ferryman,” and faithfulness qua the “escort” of the ferrying. They are the two pivotal points of the application of the idea of translation essence to practice hence deserve in-depth exploration. Apropos the translator qua the ferryman, I will describe and analyze his/her omni-temporality, subjectivity, and ego-ness in the view of intersubjectivity for the sake of a clear cognition of his/her function as such, the respective positings of the author, the translator and the reader, and their interrelations. Apropos faithfulness qua the escort of the ferrying, I will first demonstrate that faithfulness is not merely a translation standard but more a translation principle, and then I will inquire into the specific positing of faithfulness with the outward translation of Chinese academic writings as an example. I will demonstrate that text structure is the bottom line of faithfulness in the outward translation of academic writings.
