This chapter provides a brief history of the discovery of glasses. When materials in the molten state are cooled rapidly, they form amorphous solids. Various models have been proposed to describe the structure of amorphous solids, including the continuous random network model, the random close packing model, and the random coil model. The discovery and significance of chalcogenide glasses, especially arsenic-based types with layered structures and possessing unique properties, are discussed. The chapter also traces the history of ferromagnetic and non-ferromagnetic metallic glasses, as well as polymers like rubber and its vulcanization, Bakelite, PVC, and elastomers etc.
