Marquetry is the fusion of artisanship and creativity—a creativity that transforms the natural beauty, texture, and colour of wood into artwork. The marquetry technique combines subtle tactility, visual inspiration, and a simple, creative manual craft process fundamentally linked to the resources of natural materials. In a fast-paced contemporary world, artisans such as Dušan Rakić are working hard to sustain this craft, whose foundations were formed in the domain of folk art. Today, marquetry is both challenged and strengthened by innovation. The industrial revolution and subsequent epochs diminished the necessity and desirability of pursuing manual crafts. While marquetry is distinct from dehumanised batch industrial production and complex technologies, it is Rakić’s belief that by honouring craftsmanship through innovation, education, and in combination with complementary crafts, marquetry will be sustained for future generations.
