My songket journey began in 1996 when I stayed a few months in West Sumatra to learn Indonesian. During this time I travelled pretty extensively in the Minangkabau region and soon noticed the decline in all kinds of handicrafts, especially in the once flourishing songket weaving handicraft. In this essay I shall write about my efforts to revive this traditional handicraft. The task goes from researching old patterns, designing them anew, training weavers in all the necessary skills to weave a songket cloth, finding good yarns, to building looms an introducing innovations to make it possible to handweave these intricate motifs in an affordable time. All this resulted in the founding of my own songket weaving studio in 2008, with the goal to keep the traditional handicraft of songket weaving alive, at first focusing on the Minangkabau songket, but later on songket in general. Finally, I shall also outline the difficulties I encountered when trying to share my knowledge and my innovations with other weaving centres.

摘要
