The agricultural sector in Lao PDR has been targeted by the government for development and to drive socio-economic growth since a majority of the country’s population rely on agriculture for their livelihood and income. In recent decades, the government of Lao PDR has made significant efforts to enhance and advance the agricultural sector. Nevertheless, the agricultural sector has yet to fully utilize its potential, despite the abundant availability of natural resources. In addition, with improved infrastructural conditions for access to large markets, especially with the completion of the Lao PDR–China railway recently, it opens up a window of opportunity for the development of agricultural production in Lao PDR. However, the productivity of agriculture remains low due to various factors, including traditional farming practices that heavily depend on natural conditions, the adverse effects of climate change, the ongoing degradation of soil quality with limited adaptive capacity, and the limited utilization of technology. Additionally, existing government policies may not effectively stimulate or improve agricultural productivity. Therefore, doing research on agricultural development is crucial in order to investigate its future capacity for improving production while also ensuring adaptability to the prevailing circumstances of climate change, with the ultimate objective of attaining sustainable agriculture.
