With a skyrocketing advancement in 5G internet technology, content browsing has witnessed an all-embarking shoot-up engaging global communities of netizens. Social Media pages such as Facebook,YouTube, and Instagram have attracted millions of users enjoying tailor-made content. The website, “We Are Social” in its Global Digital Report (2019) emphasized that a consumer, out of an average of 6.5 hours spent per day online accounts to spending around 2.16 hours per day on social media itself. This proliferation in content creation (both user-generated and commercial) calls for disciplinary measures of content moderation prior to its online availability for consumption. Precisely, content moderation refers to the organized decorum of reviewing, screening, filtering, and controlling the ethical, emotional, and juridical appropriateness of content before it is posted online. This regulatory procedure of content decontamination is a pre-emptive approach to prevent detrimental and malicious content from reaching the audiences. To engender this, the chapter will make three pertinent contributions: (1) It will outline the suitable endeavours of content moderation with a specific focus on misinformation, hate speech, and mentally harassing content, although keeping the fundamental essence of online freedom of expression intact, (2) It will address the pivotal role of social media companies in employing regulatory policies, and procedures of content moderation through in-built AI/ML software along with a diligent team of content moderators onboard, and (3) It will discuss the ethical practices involving the moderation of online content in terms of interrogating the standard of acceptable vs. non-acceptable content considering audiences’ needs, preferences, and suitability conditions. Overall, the chapter will be imperative in recognizing and understanding the dynamics of unfiltered content consumption that can pose a serious threat to audiences. It will cater to the future implications of content moderation through agile solutions which can optimize in contributing towards a safer internet ecosystem.
