Less is More: Microblogging and Brevity as Its Key Principle

The internet driven microblogging platforms have transformed the personal, social, and professional interactions in multiple profound ways. They often serve as a stimulus of social reforms, keeping a check on the government and other authorities by wide circulation of news, reports, comments, and opinions apart from creating social connections between various individuals and groups of people. Microblogging platforms such as X; formerly Twitter, Tumblr, Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Threads, Koo etc. have become highly popular among general public, professionals and institutions as means of sharing content; image, text and video which are often tailored to specific communication and community requirements, commercial activities, business and professional needs. Communication using these sites are often bound by the size and extent of the message where less is considered more. The chapter attempts to trace how these conditions have a huge impact on communication behaviors of millions of users of these sites the world over. Using insights from a wide range of research conclusions in the area, the chapter attempts to examine how microblogging platforms not only make available a massive, easy and immediate, albeit many times anonymous, audience, and free the communicator from the hassles and burdens of face-to-face communication. The study also aims at a detailed and multi-modal analyses of the history and evolution of microblogging sites, their various roles and responsibilities in the contemporary society, their contributions in branding and campaigning, and effective ways to approach them.
