GABA as a Protectant Against Salinity Stress

Salinity represents a major environmental hurdle that restricts plant growth and crop productivity on a global scale. Its detrimental effects stem from osmotic pressure, ion toxicity, oxidative stress, and metabolic disturbances. GABA has emerged as a vital molecule that contributes to salt tolerance in plants by facilitating osmotic regulation, maintaining ion equilibrium, activating antioxidant defenses, and influencing hormone signaling. This chapter offers an in-depth exploration of GABA’s role in enhancing plant resilience under saline conditions. It discusses the synthesis and metabolic pathways of GABA, outlines the signaling mechanisms involved in GABA-mediated stress responses, and explains how GABA supports physiological and molecular adjustments in plants facing salinity stress. The chapter also highlights recent progress in identifying GABA receptors and their interactions with other stress-responsive networks. The insight distilled from the current knowledge and research findings would provide valuable inputs to engage GABA against salinity stress, ensuring sustainable crop productivity.
