Interaction by text and chat with “bot” personalities became possible decades ago, but never became very popular. However, modern AI can now create all types of interactive personalities with voice and video, which raises the possibility of the virtual reality of humans interacting with AI-generated video-with-voice personalities. Audio–visual companionship can be used for friendly conversation or for overcoming the much-prevalent loneliness, which intensified with Covid. One can “say” to friends and relatives, what should have been said a long time ago. One can interact real time with a recreated long-gone former spouse, resolving formerly unresolved issues. ChatGPT can already participate in humor better than the best comedian. All these bending of reality and “overcoming” death can even be interpreted as harmful “hallucinations,” perhaps no different from the effect of a drug. There will be many versions of AI-generated personalities for famous people. Unfortunately, consumers may prefer to interact with the most interesting version of their personality, rather than with the most historically accurate. Soon the most interesting version of personality may drown-out or immerse the most historically accurate personality. Academia and government policymakers must be warned and prepared for the upcoming usage of AI for such mind-bending purposes. Datacenters, such as for ChatGPT and Copilot, are already taking much energy, putting huge strains on the power grid. This may force users to be subjected to commercial advertisements for products and services.
