Application of Biochar for Salinity Stress Management of Crop Plants

Salinity is a critical abiotic component that impacts crop yield and is a primary risk to global food security, particularly in arid and semiarid areas. One solution against this increasingly global issue that can be accomplished with one beneficial technique is biochar application. Biochar is a carbon-rich product produced from the pyrolysis of biomass that improves soil health and increases crop production. Interaction of soil microbes and roots and remediation on physicochemical properties of soil improved by biochar amendment. In some instances, reducing the requisite fertilizer application by as high as 25%, thereby optimizing bulk density and increasing saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks) under saline conditions to enhance crop yield. This may be attributed to the high adsorption capacity of biochar that prevented transient Na+ binding, decreased osmotic stress (because of increased soil moisture content), and the release of mineral nutrients (notably K+, Ca++, and Mg++) into the solution. Their research results indicated that biochar can enhance soil quality and plant production in saline conditions. Future studies on biochar amendments are expected to elucidate the interplay of biochar with soil components, enhance remediation efforts for soil, and boost crop yields with salt stress.
