An Overview of Methods and Techniques for the Preparation and Characterization of Biochar

The concept of “biochar” is relatively new but is gaining popularity worldwide. The term itself is a combination of “bio,” meaning “biomass,” and “char,” referring to “charcoal.” It has great potential as a method not only for removing waste but also for preventing management from fouling our future too much more than we already have in terms of soil health, carbon sequestration, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, at least by producing biochar instead. Identifying soil and crop management techniques that increase the net accumulation of carbon in soils and reduce the rate at which microbes breakdown organic materials may mitigate some of the negative impacts associated with climate change. In addition, biochar has a broad specific surface area, allowing for maximal cation exchange in the soil, which results in an increased nutrient mineralization cycle that can improve physiobiochemical properties. Furthermore, biochar serves as a carbon sink that can help restore ecological integrity and environmental sustainability. However, there is significant variability in biochar yield and quality from different sources of organic matter due to differences in production temperature as well as poorly designed oxygen control systems. The manufacturing process involves a range of techniques and procedures to enhance its characteristics and applications. This chapter provides a summary of the different methods used for biochar preparation with the characterization techniques adopted.
