Emerson and Wilderness as a Place

  • Shan Gao

摘要

In this chapter, I will mainly discuss Emerson and wilderness-philia. I will discuss how his metaphysical understanding of nature has a direct influence on his intense love towards wilderness. Wilderness becomes a place rather than physical space. I examine the reason why wilderness becomes a place from the perspective of nature aesthetics in Emerson. Aesthetic appreciation of nature in Emerson triggers loving attitude towards nature, especially wilderness. However, I point out that Emerson puts priority in God. Place is the medium for us to know God, which limits his motivation for wilderness conservation.
