This chapter designs the study’s methodology for examining whataboutism/tu quoque in UN Security Council debates. It argues for constructivist grounded theory, distinguishing it from traditional and evolved grounded theory and explaining why an inductive, reflexive approach best fits rhetoric and meaning-making. The chapter sets three research questions (when, why, with what effect are WAs used in the Council), details data sources (verbatim records and video), and outlines thematic coding with NVivo, theoretical sampling, and saturation across 20 cases plus 10 for verification. It describes case selection via keyword heuristics, addresses researcher sensitivity and language limits, and mitigates subjectivity through NLP validation and interviews with diplomats and experts.
