Guneri village is located in the western part of the Kachchh district in Gujarat, with low rainfall and arid conditions. The local pastoral community is dependent on livestock rearing and rainfed agriculture for livelihood. The village grasslands are suffering from low grass productivity due to overexploitation, salinity, and invasion of exotic species Prosopis juliflora. The invasive Prosopis juliflora was removed with the help of the local community in the first year. Following the removal of Prosopis plants and treatment with manure, propagation of the native grass seeds was done in the form of seed balls. Continuous interventions were done for soil moisture conservation and grass seed propagation. The areas showed positive results in the third year with the growth of good ground vegetation cover, and the soil pH declined to 7.6. The trend observed in the soil pH and salinity were significant at p = 0.02 level and indicates substantial improvement in soil fertility. With the decline in soil salinity, certain species that were reported in the first year diminished and gradually replaced by other species in the third year. In the first year, Cyperus arenarius was the dominant species followed by Cressa cretica, Aristida funiculata, Sporobolus marginatus, and Eleusine indica. The top five species in the third year recorded include Aristida adscensionis, Indigofera linifolia, Indigofera cordifolia, Goniogyna hirta, and Melanocenchris jacquemontii. Herbaceous layer species diversity increased from 19 at the beginning of the restoration (first year) to 33 species at the end of the second year and 49 species at the end of the third year. The grass density increased by about 23 times in the third year as compared to the first year. PCA analysis points out that positive impacts were visible with improvement in the soil properties and vegetation.
