Satellites to Sanctuaries: An Integrative Study to Assess the Detrimental Impact of Rapid Urbanization on Changes in Land Use and the Avian Fauna of the Selected Wetlands in Tamil Nadu, India

Wetlands are vital ecosystems that sustain diverse biodiversity, offering crucial resources like water, food, and habitats for numerous species. They are integral to maintaining the food chain and ecological balance. However, rapid urbanization and human activities are causing significant degradation and loss of wetland areas. This is particularly evident in the decline of bird populations at sanctuaries such as Karaivetti, attributed to construction debris, increased human settlements, and disturbances from vehicular traffic and fishing activities. The study employed Land Use Land Cover (LULC) analysis and satellite imagery to monitor changes in wetlands from 2013 to 2023. Findings indicated substantial reductions in vegetation cover and water quality due to industrial discharges, sewage, and agricultural runoff. These alterations have negatively impacted habitats, resulting in a decrease in migratory bird visits and overall biodiversity. Wetlands provide invaluable ecological services and support rich biodiversity. The degradation of these ecosystems due to anthropogenic activities threatens the species that rely on them. Immediate action is required for effective management and conservation strategies to protect and restore wetland habitats. Recommendations include minimizing fishing activities during migratory seasons, establishing silent zones to reduce disturbances, and enforcing stringent measures against illegal dumping of construction debris. Implementing these measures can help mitigate the adverse impacts on wetlands and promote the sustainability of these essential ecosystems.
