Coastal ecosystems such as mangroves, tidal marshes, and seagrass belts are generally considered blue carbon ecosystems (BCEs) and are not only nature-based solutions (NBS) for mitigation and adaptation of climate change but also provide vital support to biodiversity. The Kachchh district in Gujarat, India, hosts diverse coastal ecosystems such as mangroves, mudflats, and salt marshes. Coastal ecosystems play a vital role in biodiversity conservation, coastal protection, and support the livelihood of the coastal population. Despite their ecological significance, these ecosystems in Kachchh remain understudied. This study explores the distribution, biodiversity, and a few undiscussed ecosystem services of BCEs in Kachchh, emphasizing their importance as habitats for marine and terrestrial species. Special attention is given to mangrove ecosystems, which dominate the region, as well as the lesser-known contributions of mudflats, salt marshes, and seagrass beds. The study also highlights the interdependence between BCEs and local communities, including fisherfolk and pastoralists, who rely on these ecosystems for their livelihoods. This study also comments on the threats these BCEs are facing these days.
