The Transmission of Gesture in Design Education: The Case of a Hybrid Sketching Workshop Experience, Pedagogical Innovation Through Technological Devices

The transmission of gesture, an essential pillar of design practice, is today confronted with profound transformations in pedagogical methods, particularly with the growing integration of technological devices. This article offers a detailed analysis of an innovative teaching experience that combines simultaneous face-to-face and online teaching modalities within a sketching workshop. Drawing on direct observations, student surveys, and an analysis of completed productions, the study explores the impact of technological devices on the acquisition of gestural skills. The results of this research reveal that the hybrid approach, which combines physical presence and digital tools, has great potential for stimulating students’ creativity and fostering both the learning and communication of design. However, this experience also highlights some important challenges, notably the need to preserve and transmit the tactile dimension of gesture, which is crucial to design learning, when practiced in close proximity and at a distance. The article underscores the benefits and limits of such a hybrid approach, paving the way for reflection on the balance between the technological and the human in the training of tomorrow's designers.
