The Future of Communication: Opportunities and Challenges in Emerging Technologies
摘要
This chapter follows the dramatic changes that new technologies bring to the process of communication, between their potential benefits and the ethical, societal, and security challenges they come with. It is elucidated at-length the next-generation technologies, which include AI, VR, AR, and IoT. The contributions discussed here are all about improving the user experience through a more immersive, interactive, and personalized communication. The paper also raises over serious privacy issues associated with personalized communication. Given that extensive personal data can be collected by AI systems, this can put an individual under risk of identity theft, loss of finance, and reputational damage. Hence, the paper is advocating for more robust data protection protocols such as encryption accompanied by data compliance through other specific data privacy regulations, such as the GDPR. It stresses the critical areas of immersive potential in VR and AR technologies and how humans can use digital content to interact with it altogether. However, on the other hand, it poses ethical issues due to extensive proliferation of VR and AR, as mainly spread-out digitization causes digital addiction, invasion of data privacy, and an ever-blurring line between the reality and virtual experience. This paper draws attention to these factors and tries to raise awareness by addressing these issues proactively with human experiences not being tethered but fostered. While moving beyond the narrow focus on social implications of new communication technologies, this paper recognizes how even as they may strengthen social cohesion, they may perhaps produce societal fragmentation. Instant messaging and social media bring people together across their cultural backgrounds, but they can also isolate people in echo chambers in which information and conversations relevant only to those within their beliefs are provided. In extreme cases, this increases polarization and decreased trust in democratic processes. In this regard, combating fake news or misinformation calls for enhanced media literacy and the development of AI tools that are able to flag false information. In this regard, the paper argues that new communication technologies provide unprecedented opportunities for connectivity and interactivity but introduce important challenges. The paper presses for the necessity of ethics frameworks, robust data protection protocols, and policies for inclusive access and calls for responsibility in developing and deploying these technologies so that a balance between innovation and responsibility is placed on the path to social benefits from advanced yet ethical sound communication technologies.
