Ecosystem-Based Approaches to Natural Resource Management: Adapting to Climate Change in Arid Regions

Dryland ecosystems are very fragile and vulnerable to significant climate change threats. Extreme and harsh weather conditions due to excessive heat and inadequate variable precipitation, strong winds, and low soil organic matter are some of the important contributors to the climate severity of the region. There is a need to explore the ecosystem-based approach for addressing and reducing the effects of climate change in dry regions. The combined efforts for integrated conservation, sustainable resource management, involvement of local community, and ecosystem-based solutions will enhance the resilience vis-à-vis preserving biodiversity of the region. The rehabilitation of damaged or deteriorated areas and sustainable land-use practices like integrated farming systems, agroforestry, soil conservation techniques, sustainable livestock management, etc., are essential for building adaptive capacity. These approaches will not only help increase the productive capacity but also provide several ecosystem services like carbon sequestration, increasing soil fertility, improving water table, air quality, etc. A demand exists for works that involve participants at multiple levels, ensuring that adaptation approaches are both ecologically sound and socially rightful. By implementing these ecosystem-based solutions, Indian arid regions can enhance their resilience in response to climate change, enhance livelihoods, and foster sustainable development while preserving vital ecosystem services. Eventually, a holistic ecosystem-based approach is a pressing need not to address the urgent demands of climate change but to offer long-term sustainability and adaptability in dryland ecosystems.
