Global drylands (hyperarid, arid, semiarid, and dry subhumid) cover about 42% of the earth’s land surface and support nearly 2.5 billion people (Wang et al. 2023; Lewin et al. 2024). These drylands are home to diverse ecosystems with low vegetation cover, livelihoods, and diversified, rich cultural traditions that have evolved to thrive in harsh and variable climatic conditions (Wang et al. 2024). However, land degradation has become a key challenge due to unsustainable land use, climate change, population pressure, and deforestation (Galvin 2021). This is why urgent and sustainable solutions are needed in response to the effects of climate change, from decreased agricultural productivity to loss of biodiversity and increased risk to local communities. Ecosystem-based approaches (EbA) to land restoration provide a promising framework to address these challenges. Rather than concentrating solely on the technical aspects of restoration as with conventional methods, EbA integrates natural processes, biodiversity, and ecosystem services to restore the altered landscapes, build resilience, and increase adaptive capacity to climate change (United Nations Environment Programme 2021). Such approaches appreciate the complex interactions between ecosystems and peoples, applying science and traditional and local knowledge for sustainability.
