Plant Breeding Strategies for Sustainable Agriculture in Climate Change Context: A Literature Review
摘要
Climate change poses significant challenges to global agriculture, threatening food security through increased droughts, heatwaves, and erratic rainfall. Plant breeding offers a critical solution, as it develops crop varieties capable of withstanding these climate-induced stresses. This chapter explores recent advancements in climate-smart plant breeding, focusing on strategies to enhance drought and heat tolerance, improve water-use efficiency, and increase nutrient-use efficiency. Modern genomic tools, including marker-assisted selection, CRISPR gene editing, and high-throughput phenotyping, are revolutionizing the speed and precision of breeding efforts, allowing for the targeted development of climate-resilient crops. Additionally, innovative breeding approaches are being employed to enhance crop carbon sequestration, aiding in climate adaptation and mitigation. This chapter synthesizes key findings from recent research, highlighting the most promising genes and breeding techniques for addressing the environmental challenges posed by climate change. Special emphasis is placed on critical traits, including improved root architecture, enhanced photosynthetic efficiency, and greater resilience to abiotic stressors. Finally, the review outlines future directions for integrating breeding innovations into global agricultural systems, emphasizing the need for collaboration between scientists, policymakers, and farmers to ensure the widespread adoption of climate-smart crops.
