Discursive and Practical Consciousness: Mystical Persian Poetry Assemblies in Los Angeles
摘要
This chapter examines the consciousness of speakers situated within ideologically driven positions, drawing on an ethnography of mystical Persian poetry classes in Los Angeles (2019–2022). Framed by the concepts of practical and discursive consciousness, the analysis demonstrates how deeply naturalized ideologies persist even in the absence of explicit discursive engagement. Through an examination of ethnographic data, the study reveals these poetry assemblies to be dynamic arenas where implicit and explicit forms of awareness are mediated by factors such as claims to authenticity. By employing the frameworks of enregisterment and language ideologies, the chapter investigates the nuanced relationship between positionality and awareness, utilizing narrative to contextualize these complex concepts. In its contribution to linguistic anthropology and diaspora studies, this work ultimately highlights the fluid and contingent nature of ideologies as they are lived within specific sociocultural contexts.
