This chapter presents an overview of humor and language play within discourse studies, defining verbal humor and language play and exploring their links to linguistic creativity and verbal artistry. The interaction between humor and discourse is examined, focusing on humor in Persian discourse with authentic examples illustrating both aspects. The analysis extends to the micro- and macro-level humor, including their critical and corrective potential. This endeavour offers a theoretical framework for analyzing humor in discourse, focusing on humorous discourse analysis in the Iranian context using critical discourse analysis and complexity theory. The chapter also aims to uncover how humor manifests in Persian discourse, clarifying technical terms upon introduction. Analyzing the intricacies of humor through discourse research provides valuable insights into the influence of language and humor on discourse.
