Variational calculus (Calculus of Variations, Variational Calculus, or Variational Methods) is a branch of mathematical analysis that originated in the 17th century and has been developing ever since. Its main focus is on finding methods for solving extremal functional minimizers, but its origins can be traced back to the pre-Newtonian era of mathematical research on isoperimetric and other related problems.
