From Defense to Production: The Role of Elicitors in Enhancing Plant-Derived Secondary Metabolites for Commercial Use

Elicitors are chemicals that induce various forms of plant defense mechanisms. The process of elicitation involves the use of abiotic or biotic elicitors, which has been employed to enhance the production of secondary metabolites (such as flavonoids, glycosides, alkaloids, tannins, resins, volatile oils, glucosinolates, and phenolic compounds), as well as to promote biological activities (including antioxidant, anti-obesity, and antidiabetic characteristics) and development. Elicitors induce the production of plant metabolites via altering the activities of enzymes or the expression of genes associated with the plant’s defense system. In addition, they stimulate the production of plant development hormones, which in turn promotes the growth of plants. They play a crucial role in the biosynthetic pathway that leads to enhanced production of compounds. These phytopharmaceuticals are secondary metabolites that hold significance in the pharmaceutical sector. The metabolites encompass a variety of substances including alkaloids, phenolics, flavonoids, and terpenoids. Currently, the overwhelming majority of these secondary metabolites (SM) are obtained from either cultivated or wild plants. The chemical production of these substances is either exceedingly challenging or not commercially viable. The emergence of a new field has been facilitated by an increase in the synthesis of secondary metabolites from plant cultures. The biotechnology business has the potential to receive substantial financial benefits if this line of investigation proves successful.
