Withania somnifera is one of the most reputed Indian medicinal plants, and it is commonly known as Ashwagandha, Indian ginseng, or Indian winter cherry. The plant possesses various pharmacologically important bioactive compounds in its roots, leaves, fruits and stem. This chapter reviews an enhancement of withaferin A production through an elicitation-based hairy root culture system. The leaf explants are derived from in vitro raised plantlets, and they are infected with Agrobactrium rhizogenes R1000 strain using sonication and heat treatment. The genetic transformation was confirmed by PCR using specific primers, such as rol C. Abiotic elicitors like salicylic acid and its derivatives (ASA, 3MeSA and 4MeSA) have been used for withaferin A production in the hairy roots of W. somnifera.
