Unraveling Solutions to the Complex Problems: Implementing Climate-Smart Crop Management Strategies

The agricultural industry is becoming increasingly challenged by climate change with fluctuating weather, degrading soil quality, water shortages, and pest invasions that each threatens farmer livelihoods, food security, and sustainability. This chapter explores Climate-Smart Crop Management Strategies (CSCMS) as a way to transform productivity, resilience, and sustainability. The chapter explains CSCMS by its key principles—productivity, resilience, and mitigation—and the key CSCMS strategies for each of the principles which include determining soil health, water resource management, crop diversification, integrated pest and nutrient management, and digital/new technologies, including precision farming and Internet-of-Things-based tools. The chapter showcases an implementation framework that stresses community engagement, human capacity development, supportive policy framework, and investing in infrastructure. The chapter also emphasizes potential agricultural economic benefits, environmental awareness and mitigation, and social acceptance, while discussing the barriers to adoption of CSCMS which encompass financial, knowledge, and cultural barriers. To illustrate practical examples and future approaches, the chapter provides case studies of successful projects such as drought-resilient farming and agroforestry, as well as emerging digital technologies such as artificial intelligence and remote sensing. By combining Agri-Tech and leveraging the benefits of collaboration across the agricultural landscape, CSCMS provides an effective pathway for securing future food systems and strengthening resilient landscapes for sustainable development.
