A Historical Perspective of Crop Improvement

Since ancient times, agriculture has been the foundation of human civilization, guiding humans from hunter-gatherer tribes to settled agricultural communities. Early efforts concentrated on domesticating wild plants like wheat, barley, rice, maize, etc., to maintain production. Crop rotation, irrigation systems, and polyculture were employed. Advances in crop rotation techniques, ploughing technology, and crop exchange during the Columbian Exchange in the Middle Ages and Renaissance improved food security and diversified diets. The Green Revolution of the twentieth century was a revolutionary period that greatly enhanced the world’s food output by creating high-yielding crop varieties, applying synthetic agrochemicals, irrigation infrastructure, and mechanization. These developments also highlighted the necessity of sustainable farming methods to lessen environmental problems. Crop rotation, agroforestry, and cover crops are sustainable farming methods prioritizing biodiversity and environmental health. Modern crop modification techniques have transformed agriculture in the last few decades, including mutation breeding. Crop resilience, yield, and nutritional value have increased due to precise genetic alterations made possible by marker-assisted selection, genomic selection, tissue culture, and Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR)/Cas gene editing. The intervention of Global Positioning System (GPS), remote sensing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data analytics enables precision agriculture which guarantees the focused, effective usage of resources.
