Development of Integrated Ergonomics Intervention for Employees with Signs and Symptoms of Musculoskeletal Disorders: Health Belief Model and ADDIE as Valuable Tools

Background: To date, the burden of disabling musculoskeletal pain and injuries (musculoskeletal disorders, MSDs) arising from work-related causes in many workplaces remains substantial. Quay crane operators were no exception from sustaining MSD. However, no structured protocol is available to identify and apply an intervention for quay crane operators’ problems at the workplace. This paper describes the structured development, implementation, and planning for evaluating an ergonomics intervention for quay crane operators with the signs and symptoms of MSD. The ergonomics intervention was developed using the health belief model (HBM) and ADDIE model as a framework. Methods: The principles of HBM and ADDIE were applied to combine theory and evidence in the development, implementation, and planning of the evaluation of an integrated ergonomics workplace intervention aimed at reducing the level and intensity of signs and symptoms of MSD Discussion: The development of the ergonomics intervention according to the HBM and ADDIE principles resulted in a structured ergonomics intervention tailored explicitly to employees with signs and symptoms of MSD. Increased scores in knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) and decreased VAS pain scores were proposed as a result of behavioral change. Conclusion: The HBM and ADDIE frameworks are promising methods for developing interventions tailored to a specific target group in the field of occupational health.
