Dynamic Signs: Statistical Extraction Of Ergonomic Requirements of Moving Signs from Interviews and Questionnaires for Various Users

Older people and people with vision, hearing, physical, and cognitive disabilities were surveyed regarding in-facility moving signs through interviews and questionnaires. Principle component analysis was carried out, by attribute, on the response data indicating “agreement/disagreement” of respondents to items on the list of issues (requirements on signs). The results reveal differences in issues which must be addressed by dynamic signs for each attribute. People with low vision tend to agree on issues related to sign placement, people with hearing disabilities on sign expression, wheelchair users on sign style of movement and use of sound, people with cognitive disabilities on icons and colors composing the sign, older people on sign brightness/contrast, and older people with dementia on simplicity of information. Based on the trends of all attributes, the international standards relating to accessibility of dynamic signs that we are about to propose should emphasize “communicating information simply.”
