Usability Evaluation of the Fuel Management System for a Flag Carrier Airline

According to several IATA reports, fuel is one of the airline’s most significant expenses, accounting for 18% to 30% of its operating costs. This prompted a flag carrier airline to utilize a commercial fuel management system to improve their planning and decision-making on fuel savings and consumption. As such systems are driven by statistical and simulation models that are intensive on numerical and multiple variables, ensuring that the interface design and user experience are adequately factored in the development for sustained use is critical. This work presents the usability evaluation of a fuel management consumption system designed especially for pilots and flight operation personnel and measured against the System Usability Scale. Results indicate that the users are satisfied with the interface and navigation. However, adherence to Nielsen’s heuristics, particularly on consistency and standards, can be improved by revising the position of specific controls. Shortcut gestures can also be created to enhance its flexibility and ease of use.
