How Well a Simulation-Training Program Prevents WMSDs Among Nursing Staff?

Training has a great place in ergonomics. Through training, ergonomics can increase the capabilities of individuals and their potentials to be able to adapt positively to the work place and to maximize the effectiveness of the work components (machines, work systems, tools, etc.) through training. One of the well-known ergonomic training methods is the simulation. It is powerful, as it combines the advantages of out-of-work training methods with the positives of on-the-job training methods. The study’s goal was to show how well a simulation-based training program might avoid WMSDs and help emergency and intensive care nursing staff members strengthen their motor skills. To collect the data, the Rapid Entire Body Assessment method [1] was applied on a sample of ten nurses (age X = 43 years, professional experience X = 7 years). Before training intervention, results showed that the majority of the nurses in the sample had postures that were characterized as having a high degree of WMSDs risk and necessitating an immediate intervention. However, after training intervention, results demonstrated the efficiency of the suggested training program to lower WMSDs risks and to improve the nurses’ motor skills. Hence, to be efficient, the medical and healthcare training programs should incorporate ergonomics principles. Enhancing the learning process by strengthening the acquired ergonomics, best practices during the training and eliminating the residual behaviors of the wrong acquired practices of patient handling, was put forth as a recommendation.
